Tropical Contemporary presents "Freestyles" a solo show by Mitchell Barton. Barton's work in "Freestyles consists of various media including photographs and stickers, paintings, video and more. Freestyles will be open on Friday, June 22nd with a reception from 6-9pm.
"I’m interested in the idea of competition and ‘one-upping’, and its role in culture as well as in things like technology, advertising, and fashion. Along with this, I often wonder about the ways that ideas are disseminated in culture, and how we stake a claim on spaces through advertising, appropriation, or actions such as placing stickers on railings, cars, etc. This claiming of space and spreading of ideas creates an interesting realm of competition and quickness, where creating new content and updating technology feels extremely important and also creates a pressure to produce."
