A blade of grass is held, a body is submerged into water, a mushroom is noticed, a twig catches a piece of hair, a single step shifts the earth under your feet. Cat Tails, Beachgrass, and the Rising Tide is a two-person exhibition that considers the natural environment as a living archive: a space that echoes the past, while it simultaneously expands, shifts, and moves forward. This view assists the artists in re-considering their own subjectivity through realizing new ways to process and understand memory, trauma, and communication.

Sophia Schultz Rocha (b. 1994) is a Colombian-American filmmaker, photographer, and artist born in Sarasota, Florida and currently based in Oakland, California. They are interested in collective future-making within climate degradation that prioritizes the relationship of people of color, queer, and trans folks within nature. Through understanding the body as well as the landscape as an archive for memory, healing, and knowledge, they question communication, inter-species dynamics, and agency.

Sam Wrigglesworth (b. 1995) is a photographer/artist living and working in Eugene, Oregon. They recently completed their BFA in Photography from the University of Oregon. Their work often deals with navigating and re-negotiating their relationships to memory. They typically use analog large and medium format cameras which requires them to employ a slow and intentional process in order to understand an image. In the same way, understanding oneself or one’s memories is often slow and cumulative.
